Youth Center in Moldova
Support The Youth
This project is funding the activities of a youth center in Balti, a city in the Republic of Moldova. The goal of the project is to involve young people in fulfilling and meaningful interest, so they could spend more time together in a safe environment under supervision of qualified staff, as opposite to the street.
Our work in Moldova began in September 2016, with the support of children and youth who visit the Youth Center Fakel (Torch) in Balti. Fakel is registered with the City of Balti and has been active since 2003. The center operates from Monday to Saturday from 2 to 7 pm.
The center works with the children and youth who range in age from 12 to 24. Presently, there is one staff working at the center. On an average day, about 10 to 12 children rotate through the center’s doors. In total, Fakel encompasses about 100 children.
Out of 100 children, 20-30% belong in the risk groups (children from troubled and single families, young adults in past conflict with the law, youth with history of substance abuse, etc.). The other 70-80% children come from better off backgrounds. Their participation is important as these children can share more positive outlook and provide good influence. In general, Fakel adopted a model whereby one child in distress is coached by two to three children from better off families.
20-30% children belong in the risk groups, while other 70-80% come from better off backgrounds.
The lasting difference
The center offers a safe and comfortable place for children and youth where they can meet after school and participate in meaningful activities. We provide a small nutritious snack such as fruit and cookies, tea or juice. We purchase the sport and other items to engage youth in table tennis, soccer, chess, board and outdoor games, art and craft making, photo contests, book and film discussions. We invite speakers and instructors who talk to young people about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and teach them the important skills. We take youth on the tours and hiking to explore the beauty of our country. We also encourage them to volunteer for the city events such as marathons, nature cleanups, visits to the nursing homes, hospitals and orphanages.
We hope you can join us in supporting this important project. Your contribution will help to keep children and youth from the streets, boost their confidence, help them integrate into their networks and communities. The memories and friendship these children build in the center will last for their entire lives.
Thank you for your consideration!
